It came to mind.
Twelve months ago, I walked into the pantry to join the group in my first non-work related event only to find myself surrounded by people, the likes of whom I would normally disassociate myself with.
It was like a scene directly lifted from The House Bunny. You know that part when Anna Faris got stuck with the less popular girls? That's how I felt. Well, the people I am with, they're not losers. Not all of them, anyway. Rather, they seem to belong to the traditional breed of Finance persons - quiet, serious and vapid.
If anyone would have asked me then, I would have flatly said that my work sucks.
Nevertheless, I stayed despite the more lucrative offers that came my way. I chose to make the most out of my current employment. While it does not pay much, the non-monetary benefits that I reap are more than enough to keep me quite contented. I was once a King without a kingdom. Now, I feel like I have established an empire.
While there's still so much more to accomplish, I feel like I have shown what I am capable of, work-wise. In terms of camaraderie, I shall claim that I am the catalyst the department needed to get that extra oomph. I am the driving force behind the dinner and movie dates, coffee sessions, lunch outs, road trips and last-minute getaways this year. These bonding moments made our team more unified, and most definitely recognized as a fun group to be with. The stereotype no longer applies to them, to us.
In this regard, I have learned to appreciate my work, and most especially the people whom I work with. I wake up each morning anticipating what the day holds for me at the office. Are we going to have lunch at RCBC? Will we talk about A? When's the next gimmick?
The best work environment is one that fosters a good and harmonious relationship among team members. I'm lucky to be in one. I know because my work doesn't feel like work at all. I am having fun.
The HR partner, who was like, really pretty, paused before throwing back the question at me, "How are you?"
"I'm doing great. Everything's peachy," I readily answered. My words couldn't be any truer. Despite the occasional hassle and headache that normally come with any job for that matter, the relationships that I have forged, more than anything else, even the work itself, make the past year genuinely worthwhile.
For the first time in years, I feel like I belong. At this moment, I am where I'm supposed to be.
I am with the people whom I need.

Celebrating my first year at work. Twelve months is a lifetime, in bunny years.

Happy Anniversary and Congratulations!!!
Lunch at RCBC? As in RCBC plaza? Is your office in the vicinity? hehehe just asking...
awww...
if i only had the same people from my previous work, i would have not resigned...
well, if you cannot enjoy the work then enjoy the friendship you build there.
I think you need to move that Sola bottle a bit to the left for my photo frame to become visible.
So which floor are you so I can add something to your not-so-messy work station. ;)
Happy first year at work.
tama it's the people you work with makes it worth for you to stay
sometimes sila dahilan why you love to go to work everyday
Ang cute ni stitch!!!!!!!!
=)
@gillboard: Thank you! =) Nice to see that parrot back in here.
@glentot: As a matter of fact, we might be closer than you think... Hahaha. =) But yes, my office is quite near.
@wanderingcommuter: Oh, work is enjoyable but given my learning curve, I tend to get bored after a few months.
I am lucky though that I always find good people in almost all of the companies that I've been a part of. They make working sound less tedious and more fun.
@goodboi: Oh, your photo frame is not behind the Sola.
It's on the left side of my desk, solong-solo yung space doon. =p
Haha. Messy ba? Blame the season. Those are mostly Christmas gifts. Shall I wait for yours? You know which floor I'm on. Haha.
@thecuriouscat: Precisely. It's been a while since I felt like this - yung gigising sa umaga and excited pumasok para makipagkwentuhan sa officemates. Haha. =)
@joanna: I know!!! =) Love ko 'yan. And his head moves pala. Keeps me from getting bored. Haha.
Left and unfeatured, YEAH. Wait for the additional mess. If you happen not receive anything, then prolly it was sent to the wrong building. :)
@goodboi: That'll be sad. =|
If that's the case then I won't hold my breath.
(jumped from someone else's blog)
Nothing feels better than spending one year at work then realizing after that it hasn't been a bloody waste of time at all. Congrats. :)
Cheers! Happy holidays!
Marko, really really happy for you:) Truly sincerely happy :) (see na lang my last blog, haha, you'll know why I'm happy for you :))
Ngayon ko lang napansin! You have our picture there on your desk :P Cooooll!!
@Victor Gregor: I can think of something better but it's analogous. Haha. =) Thanks, Victor Gregor! (Mouthful nick you have there. Haha.)
@lil superman's mum: Bomsky! Thanks! =)
I have read your blog and I didn't respond because I want to talk to you about it when we meet. Nevertheless, let me just say that you are one of the brightest among the people I know. Work-wise, you're diligent and responsible. I don't think you need to prove yourself to anyone. The fact that you were hired means that they believe you have the capability, and then you were regularized so that means you proved your worth. =)
And yeah, it's one of the two pics that I have on my desk. :P
It's just a phase, Bom. I'll pray that the solutions will present itself before the year closes para you can start 2010 right.
