Prior to being ordained as full-fledged priests, do seminarians take a subject that teaches them how to give out homilies? I've always wondered. Is it like an English class where they need to speak impromptu about a certain passage? Do they need to achieve a certain standard before they can pass the course? Really, I'm just wondering because it feels like I have been deprived of salvation, or at the very least, a life lesson when priests deliver sermons that fall flat of what should be. Or when it goes on and on and on and on, when in fact a homily, as per Vatican, should only be for at most eight minutes.
A homily is, far and away, the single most important source of information on faith so it should be something that resonates with such, something that will make the congregation want to go a little deeper and connect with the basics with utmost honesty. To achieve that, homilies should be engaging and pretty much, relatable – something that tackles things that are meaningful for everyday life. As its end-all, be-all goal, homilies should make people who are coming out of the church realize that they have just been touched by grace.
To be completely honest, nowadays, good sermons, much like anything else that is preceded by the word good, are hard to come by.

can't comment... i don't go to church...
don't they study for years or sumthing?
sa religion namin, they need to study din pero parnag grad school ang dating. lol
hehehe... i feel the same thing especially if the priest sounds like a politician... whatever happened to separation of church and state...
I believe that the burden is always on the receiver. Ask yourself why you're not able to make sense out of a homily. :)
Ako, lagi akong inaantok and I must admit that it's a struggle for me to listen. But the good thing is, I am trying my best to listen and by listening, I aim to receive the saving grace you are talking about. ;)
As they say, M, it's a matter of perspective. :)
priests-to-be are required to take and pass homiletics, the study of you know what. all can pass but i tell you, only some men are really good at preaching which is a sad reality. i wish there are more bright men so people could appreciate their faith every time they go out of the church on sundays.
