"Lunch at Paseo Center, 11:15. See you." He texted.
It was already 11:30 and Mak was walking idly, not minding that he's already fifteen minutes behind the schedule he set. He was all-dressed up, wearing a vest over the new long-sleeved polo shirt he bought the other day for this occasion. He wouldn't dare ruin the ensemble by brisk walking towards the meeting place. One, it's a bit hot outside; and two, leather shoes. Besides, the main point of dressing up was to make an impact and there’s no better way to make sure everyone notice it than by being fashionably late.
After fifteen minutes, he finally arrived at the set destination. He was looking for a short, burly guy but as he walked past the escalator he heard somebody call out his name.
"Marky!"
OMG. It was Wormtail minus the thick glasses, a couple of hundred pounds, and several thousand hair strands as well. He looked different. Mak was impressed.
"Let's try Teriyaki Boy." Mak suggested as the two headed upstairs. "Damaso will be following shortly. He's at Glorietta."
The lunch was brief with the two friends trying to catch up on lost time. It's been ten years and nobody has ever contacted anyone for a quick chat, much more a grand reunion. It was a good thing that Mak organized this.
He found out that Wormtail is now a junior assistant manager for a local bank ("What's next, senior assistant manager," he asks) on weekdays and a certified party boy on weekends. He now dances to trance music. Hence, the fondness for attending parties like Hed Kandi and such. Unfortunately, he lost Mak on the dance part.
"Wait. You now dance?"
"Yeah." Wormtail nodded as he took in an entire cube of tofu.
"Wow." Mak grinned. His friend has indeed changed.
"Do you remember the Matchbox cars? I still collect them.” Wormtail said after taking a sip off his iced tea. Mak smiled thinking that at least that aspect of his friend was still intact.
"How about you? Mahal mo pa rin ba ang The Moffatts?" He added, laughing.
"OMG. You still remember that?"
"Oo naman!"
"I still have your gift intact if that's what you mean." Mak said, amused. He remembered Wormtail's grand Christmas gift back in Junior High. It was a box full of the band's memorabilia – several VHS tapes of recorded TV guestings, concerts and music videos, compact discs, posters, stickers and other whatnots. It was a fan boy’s treasure. "It's still with me, box and all." Mak laughed. There's no way that he would be embarrassed to admit that he was a fan. After all, to deny one's past is to deny one's self.
And The Moffatts - they made interesting pop music. Then.
TO BE CONTINUED.
